A scale for numeracy (PhD project)

This project seeks to connect the 5th grade and 8th grade scales in numeracy. Photo: Colourbox

About the project

This project aims to develop a scale for proficiency in numeracy from 5th to 9th grade. Through utilizing the platform and testing materials for a national testing-system called Nasjonale Prøver, we will test students in 6th and 7th grade to connect the 5th and 8th grade tests. The aim of the project is to be able to measure students’ progression over time for both individual students and cohorts in numeracy.

Background

CEMO is currently working to build a research portfolio focused on the quality assessment systems in the Norwegian schoolsystem. As part of this portfolio, we plan to study how numeracy proficiency among Norwegian students develop over time. This is particularly relevant in an international context, as we have results from TIMSS that show a weak development in mathematics skills among Norwegian students from 4th/5th to 8th/9th grade compared to other countries.
