Title: Mathematical competency demand of numeracy items in the 2018 Norwegian National Numeracy Tests

Abstract: Being numerate is viewed as being able to use mathematics in different contexts, be that personal, professional, or as a participant in society. Using mathematics in a context requires other skills than what we would normally think of as mathematical skills. A widely used framework for such skills is that of Mathematical Competencies, developed by Niss and Jensen in the early 2000s. In this study, we applied this mathematical competency framework to evaluate the mathematical competency demand of the 95 items used in the 2018 administration of the Norwegian National Numeracy Tests. Results from this classification will be presented, focusing on the classification reliability and the relationship between mathematical competencies and the difficulty of numeracy items.
