International large-scale assessments (ILSA) necessitate the skillful use of advanced quantitative methods. Some specific possibilities and challenges that deserve attention in the near future are:
- Data have been collected over many years of ILSAs, giving longitudinal data at the system-level. This creates specific challenges and opportunities which are not yet fully addressed by research.
- In order to support interpretations of data from ILSA, research targeting how measurement across widely different languages and cultures across countries but in fact also within countries can (or cannot) be implemented, is still needed.
- ILSA are increasingly implemented as computer-based assessments, providing new opportunities and challenges for research
- ILSA are only loosely coupled to the national systems in most countries, a neglect which needs to be targeted in nationally based research and development activities.
A close collaboration with researchers at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research (ILS) will be pursued in this strand and the strand will also connect to the recently started EU-MSCA PhD school Outcomes and Causal Inference in International Comparative Assessments (OCCAM).
