A superiour guide to performing an academic self

In this satirical performance Mona Abdel-Fadil asks what it really takes to become a successful academic. Through a gallery of professors with enticing names such as Nicholas Nostalgie and Hara S. Mint Ford, we gain insight into how one best can cope with the increasing demands for gender equality and diversity in academia, and the world at large. 

How to plan, implement and minimizing risk in your research project

Research projects are characterized by a high degree of uncertainty and complexity. This course will help you as a project manager to understand and plan research projects to minimize risk and ensure effective implementation.

Video and audio transcription with F4transkript

In this workshop we will go through the basics and functions of the program F4transcript. Bring your own laptop (and headphones) and get the help you need to start using F4transkript (available for all UiO employees/students). This is a course in the software and not transcribing in general.

Recording with small video cameras

Teaching learning video lab has a selection of smaller video cameras which allows for simple and convenient field recordings. The cameras can be connected to external microphones which can be helpful in more demanding recording situations.

Use of portable video labs – approved for red data

Self-help techniques to prevent stress and mental health issues

Traumatic experiences, negative life events, but also daily hassles can lead to symptoms that interfere your daily functioning. In this lecture you will learn about how daily stress can affect our mental health and self-administered techniques to prevent symptoms.

In this age of short attention spans, social media and evolving technologies, our traditional ways of presenting is simply not working to its full potential. Therefore, we have to rethink the way we are presenting information in order to properly engage and truly resonate with our audiences.  This talk aims to give those working in Academia practical tips and guidance on how to instantly improve their presentations by communicating effectively and by thinking like a designer.

Using social media to boost your research career

Researchers have traditionally had to rely on journals, conferences, and conventional media outlets for research dissemination and networking. However, a limitation of this system is that a small group of gatekeepers decide what gets shared or who gets to present their work. Social media has turned this system on its head by providing an opportunity for anyone to share their work and build collaborations, free of gatekeeping. This talk will demonstrate the benefits of social media and provide some practical tips on getting started.

Data classification and storage

What is personal data? What does yellow, red and black data means – and where should you store what? This course will give you and introduction to UiO’s storage and classification guide and give you some examples of data collection scenarios with potential legal issues. 

The Dean's trial lecture

PhD-candidates have to face a unique examination no other student group has to, namely the trial lecture. A lecture uncoupled from their research, where we get to see how good of an orator they are.

We have turned the tables, and now the Vice Dean for Research will hold a trial lecture over a topic the PhD-candidates have chosen, in the ultimate form of academic reprisal.

Introduction to TSD

In this course we will go through the basics of TSD. What TSD is and what are working applications, how to create a TSD project for your research project. What are the opportunities for getting data safely in and out of TSD.

Collect data with nettskjema and diktafon with import to TSD

How do you create a nettskjema that is linked directly to your TSD project? In this short introduction you will get hand on knowledge on how to use the 'nettskjema' and 'nettskjema diktafon' (audio recordings on your phone) and link them to TSD for safe direct delivery off all recordings. 

Introduction to systematic literature search

A systematic literature search is a prerequisite for a systematic review and other evidence syntheses, in order to avoid bias. This course will give a brief introduction to the methods used when conducting a systematic search.

Informed are the most common legal and ethical basis for research. How you design your consent, will have consequences for the whole research project life cycle – from collecting data to sharing of your results.

In this introduction course to open access publishing, you will learn about the requirements from research funders, self-archiving, licenses and how to publish through UiO's publishing agreements.

Research data management 101 – planning and managing research data

The course will go through primary aspects of data management including data management plans, classification, storage, organization, FAIR, persistent identifiers, licenses, and archives.

How to prepare a research proposal

Are you preparing your first funding application?  This course will take you through the process of developing a research proposal with focus on the Research Council of Norway. 

Simple audio and video editing – for research purposes

Editing video and audio can be need when working with research data. Shotcut and audacity is openly available software which allows you to edit videos and audio without prior knowledge of editing in general. The course will cover different methods of masking unwanted data, and of the basic principles of audio and video editing.

Storytelling in academic writing
