FAIRification is not a FAIRy tale!

How to ensure use and reuse of qualitative and context-sensitive data? The QualiFAIR project will introduce you to the main challenges researchers face in the FAIRification of qualitative and context-sensitive data and what you can do to facilitate sharing, reuse and multiple use of research data.

Qualitative and context-sensitive data such as in-depth interviews, video recordings from classrooms or field notes are, by definition, contextual, here-and-now specific, and in many cases person-identifying.

As a result, reuse and multiple use of these data is challenging and it creates barriers to openness in qualitative research.

At the same time, research institutions commit to open access policies, funding organisations promote FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) research data and ask for plans and principles to ensure open access and reuse of data.

Meeting these requirements with qualitative and context-sensitive data faces certain obstacles and challenges. In the recent years, quantitative data has been made increasingly FAIR across disciplines, data management, archiving and sharing, but procedures for qualitative data are still in their infancy.

This session discusses issues that pose barriers for open access to data as well as its further reuse and multiple use. At the end of the session audience is also presented with possible solutions to facilitate FAIRness of the qualitative and context-sensitive data. 

Take aways

This presentation is aimed at early career and senior researchers as well as technical and administrative staff who guide researchers in questions related to data management and sharing. As a result, the audience will have broader knowledge of challenges and solutions for sharing and reuse of qualitative data. We will also discuss why the FAIR principles are needed, including their benefits and obstacles. Finally, the audience will become familiar with the main building blocks for reusable data: consents, data management, metadata and stewardship.
