Supervision

Supervision is mandatory for all students writing their master thesis. You cannot submit your master thesis without having actively participated in supervision.

Assignment of a supervisor

The department assigns you a supervisor based on your project description. While it is the Department of Education that makes the final allocation of your supervisor, you may submit a request.

Scope of supervision

The master's thesis is worth 45 ECTS credits. This entails a maximum of 40 hours of guidance at your disposal. The hours include the supervisor's preparation and reading of texts, which normally corresponds to 15 hours of direct supervision with your supervisor.

Distribution of supervisory sessions

How the supervision hours are used is agreed upon between you and your supervisor. As a student, you are responsible for arranging appointments with your supervisor, as well as following these up. During the third semester you will focus especially on literature that can be used in your thesis, as well as plan data collection for the thesis. The fourth semester you will prepare and complete your master's thesis.

It is important that you inform the department as early as possible concerning absences or other matters that may postpone supervision. If problems arise in connection with your supervisor or that the planned progression is not upheld, contact your administrative coordinator.

Important guidelines for the first supervisory session

There are many important things to be aware of when meeting with your supervisor for the first time. During this first session, you should discuss your thesis topic and create a timeline for submission.  You will find more information in the guidelines for supervision sessions. These have been developed in order to assist with any areas that may need clarification.

Supervision agreement

The supervision agreement affirms and clarifies conditions that form the basis for supervision of your master's thesis. The agreement shall help ensure reciprocal rights and obligations. The supervision agreement is mandatory and a prerequisite for submitting your thesis for grading. See the Regulations relating to Studies and Examinations at the University of Oslo ยง 2.5.7.

You must bring the supervision agreement to the first meeting with your supervisor. The agreement shall be reviewed, filled out and signed by both. We recommend that you review the document "Guidelines for supervision sessions" at the same time. The completed agreement must be returned to the department for registration within a given deadline.
