  Teacher education (TE) in Norway is nationally mandated and subject to much political attention because education is an important social and cultural phenomenon with a significant place in policy and everyday life. A main purpose of the latest TE reform implemented in 2017 is to raise the status and professionalism of teachers. The ambition of the Norwegian government is to permanently strengthen the teaching profession, thereby strengthening the quality of schooling overall by introducing a five-year master's degree as a requirement for all newly qualified teachers in primary and secondary school. This chapter describes the Norwegian TE context of today and the national requirements for the five-year integrated master programs for primary and secondary schools. To give the reader a background understanding of the various innovations in our TE programs presented in Chapters 4–16, we exemplify how the various programs are organized and structured at UiT and UiO.

  Teacher Education (TE) in Norway has developed with a strong emphasis on the research-based and practice-oriented professionalization of TE programs led by universities and university colleges. In the past decade, national reforms have emphasized the development of research competence for student teachers, enabling them to continually develop their own and the school’s collective practices. Center for Professional Learning in Teacher Education, called ProTed, the first National Centre of Excellence in Higher Education in Norway, was established in 2012 as a consortium between the University of Oslo and UiT The Arctic University of Norway. ProTed worked as a catalyst for research and development through systematic interventions, evaluation, and dissemination within integrated five-year TE programs. This chapter gives an introduction to this anthology, which presents a selection of ProTed’s innovations. The chapter outlines five thematic sections to help the reader navigate through different types of innovations: 1) development of integrated TE, 2) research literacy in TE, 3) bridging the gap between the university campus and schools (theory and practice), 4) development of professional identity, and 5) video as a means of connecting coursework to teaching practice.

  This paper reports on student peer collaboration in an online environment in an international shared curriculum, the Global Climate Exchange. Four cohorts of students (age 16 -19) from Canada, China, Norway and Sweden (n=157) were engaged in four wiki-based activities where they collaborated with peers locally and internationally. Previously, impact from Global Climate Exchange on students’ conceptual understanding was analysed, indicating a positive impact which might be explained by the amount of interactions with peers and international peer collaboration. This paper looks further into the details of the students’ peer interactions in terms of how they communicate in the online Global Climate Exchange learning environment. The study revealed that communication between international peers might be more constructive than when communication is limited to national peers. This might be a possible explanation for our previously findings indicating that international peer collaboration may well be an approach to enhance students’ conceptual understanding of climate change.

  In connection with an exhibition on radiation-related environmental issues at the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology, teaching units including pre- and post-visit activities were developed for visiting students. The units were centered on "real-life" stories concerning radiation issues that were used by the students as starting points for reflections around these issues. Using the teaching units as an evaluation instrument, students' written responses were analysed with a dual purpose: 1) to gain insight into the understanding of and attitudes on radiation issues held by students in their final year of compulsory science instruction; 2) to explore whether the exhibition medium may successfully convey scientific information that students find relevant and helpful in making personal judgments in environmental issues. In the present work, some prominent features of Norwegian 16-year-olds' understanding of radiation were identified, and it was noted that these were in many aspects similar to those described for other age groups and nationalities. Furthermore, it was found that a visit to the exhibition clearly provided science learning outcome for the majority of students; however, for students who had strong alternative conceptions about the exhibition's issues, their perceptions tended to inhibit their correct interpretation of new concepts introduced at the exhibition. We found few examples of students using scientific information from the exhibition in making personal judgements in matters concerning radiation and the environment, and we hypothesize that this may be due to a lack of practice in employing scientific understanding in this way. We believe that the use of museum exhibitions as part of a science education for scientific literacy is worth further exploration and might have increased success if new ways were found of improving the cooperation between museums and schools.

  Ellen K. Henriksen og Doris Jorde fikk i oktober 1997 i oppdrag av Norges forskningsråd å komme med en rapport om stimuleringstiltak for å øke barn og unges interesse for og rekruttering til forskning og vitenskap. Mandatet for oppdraget er å utarbeide en rapport med tre deler: a) en beskrivende oversikt over aktiviteter som er rettet mot barn og unge, som har som mål å øke interessen og kunnskapen omkring forskning, vitenskapelig basert kunnskap og motivasjon for å velge teoretiske fag. Oversikten skal også inkludere aktiviteter hvor Forskningsrådet allerede er engasjert. Oversikten bør inneholde kostnader for tiltakene. Hvis mulig bør den også omfatte en kort beskrivelse av beslektede aktiviteter som har samarbeidspotensialer. b) Gjennom intervjuer med utvalgte, sentrale personer skal det innhentes synspunkter på de ulike aktivitetene. Dette kan omfatte begrunnelse for hvorfor de er startet, hvordan man vurderer betydningen, og hvordan man ønsker at de skal utvikles videre. c) Rapporten skal munne ut i beskrivelser av ulike mulige samarbeids- og organisasjonsformer for framtida, formulert som alternative scenarier. Arbeidet med denne rapporten har pågått fra begynnelsen av oktober til midten av desember 1997. Arbeidet har bestått i å intervjue sentrale personer og gjennomgå skriftlig materiell angående de ulike tiltakene og angående Forskningsrådets formidlingsstrategi. I arbeidets første periode ble fakta om de ulike tiltakene innhentet; i den siste fasen har forfatterne, gjennom diskusjoner, tankearbeid og konsultasjoner av forskningslitteraturen angående formidling, kommet fram til anbefalingene som er presentert i rapportens siste del.
