About ICILS
The ICILS study contributes to the understanding of how digital technology is used in schools and its impact on teaching methods with regards to developing digital competence. The study provides information about students' digital competence and in 2023 it has a separate part testing algorithmic thinking.
Central questions ICILS 2023 will address
- How are Norwegian students' knowledge and skills in terms of digital technology?
- What are the attitudes and knowledge of teachers and school leaders in terms of digital technology?
- How has students' digital competence changed over the last 10 years?
- Are there gender differences in students' digital competence?
- Which features of the students and their background are important for the student's score on the student test, their knowledge, skills, attitudes and commitment in the use of digital technology?
- How do Norwegian students do on the test compared to students from the other participating countries?
- What do Norwegian students achieve in terms of different test results on different parts of the test digital competence (CIL) and algorithmic thinking (CT) compared to students from other countries?
- What significance does school context have for the results of the test?
- How are questions and assignments in ICILS2023 relevant for the competences in the new curricula implemented in 2020?
- Which variables at student level and school level explain variation in digital competence?
- How well qualified and prepared are Norwegian students to actively participate in a digital society and work-life?
Organization
The ICILS survey is conducted under the auspices of the IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement). IEA coordinates and has academic responsibility for the study internationally. Unit for Quantitative Education Analyzes (EKVA) at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research University of Oslo is responsible for conducting the survey in Norway on behalf of the Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training (udir.no).
Timeline
- March 2020: 1st meeting of National Research Coordinators (NRCs)
- 2020 - mid 2021: Framework revision, establishment of testing platform and instrument development
- May - June 2021: Pilot trial
- February - March 2022: Field trial
- February - May 2023: Main survey data collection in Northern Hemisphere countries
- September - November 2023: Main survey data collection in Southern Hemisphere countries
- November 2024: Publication of the results
- March 2025: Launch of a public-use database and documentation
Participants
Internationally, the participants in the survey are 8th-grade students. In Norway, 9th-grade students participate as Norwegian students are about one year younger than students in the same grade level in many of the other participating countries.
In the ICILS study, students complete both a test and answer a survey. In addition, teachers, principals and IT managers in every participating school answer a survey.
