Learning in the age of algorithms (PhD-project)

The project aims to explore how digital technology based on AI can improve the the writing skills of low-level writers. The project is part of the Learning in the Age of Algorithms (LAT) project, led by Øystein Gilje and Sten Ludvigsen.

Background

The Learning in the Age of Algorithms (LAT) project aims to promote skill development by utilizing artificial intelligence in schools for educational purposes. This project is a collaborative effort between two faculties at the University of Oslo (IPED and ILS), and Asker municipality.

The Ph.D. project is part of LAT and aims to investigate how speech-to-text technology and/or other AI-based software can be integrated into process-oriented writing processes. The target group is middle school students struggling with text production and organization. The purpose is to examine whether AI-based speech-to-text technology and/or other types of assistance from generative AI can be utilized to enhance students' writing skills beyond the micro-levels of the text. The main hypothesis is that generative AI can unlock learning and performance potential if the technology allows students to focus on global aspects of text organization, structure, and idea development, rather than fundamental text decoding. For instance, Kathy B. Ewoldt points to research indicating that directing instruction towards "higher-order skills," such as idea development, organization, and focus, yields the best results for students' writing abilities (Ewoldt, 2018, p. 313).
