About the project
The main aim is to study lower secondary school students’ and -teachers’ perception of and experiences with the concept. Through comparisons of teacher and student perspectives with actual observed teaching across grade 8 and 10, this Ph.D. will yield important longitudinal knowledge on the extent to which and how life skills are being thought during the implementation of LK20.
Objectives
The Ph.D. project aims to:
1. Contribute knowledge about life skills in grade 8, focusing on how teachers perceive and operationalize life skills in language subjects within and across schools.
2. Contribute knowledge about life skills in grade 10, not only focusing on how teachers perceive and operationalize life skills in language subjects, but also compare such operationalization over time, from grade 8 to 10.
3. Examine experiences with life skills as a part of language education, among students in grade 8 and 10.
Background
As a part of the EDUCATE team, this Ph.D. project takes part in the evaluation of how the curricular renewal is operationalized in the school subjects. It will be conducted through a mixed methods design where qualitative data (interviews and videos) and quantitative data (logs and surveys) are combined and integrated (Brevik & Mathé, 2021).
Financing
The project is financed by The Research Council of Norway and Marienlyst school through the public sector Ph.D. scheme.
Cooperation
The project is a part of EDUCATE at ILS, UiO. The Evaluation of the new curriculum reform (EDUCATE) conducts research on and evaluation of the new curriculum reform in the subjects related to life skills, digital and exploratory competence.
The project is conducted with support from Marienlyst skole, Oslo commune.
