Democracy and Politics in Upper Secondary Social Studies: Students’ Perceptions of Democracy, Politics, and Citizenship Preparation (PhD project)

This study investigates how students perceive the central concepts of 'democracy' and 'politics', as well as citizenship preparation in social studies.

About the project

The main purpose of the study is to investigate how 16 – 17-year-old students enrolled in the obligatory subject ‘social studies’ perceive and relate to the concepts of ‘democracy’ and ‘politics’. In addition, the study aims at investigating the students’ perspectives on the school subject social studies and which factors that are related to students’ perceptions of citizenship preparation in the subject. Democratic and political theory as well as literature on citizenship education frame the study

Background

This study is based on a multiple methods multiphase research design (Creswell, 2002). The study utilises group interviews, individual interviews and a quantitative survey.

Financing

The project is a four-year doctoral research project (2014–2019), financed by the Department of Teacher Education and School Research at the University of Oslo.
