A national representative sample of students in lower secondary school in the 10. year (last) of obligated education, have answared a questionnaire about their opinions about school. Specially focus is on their opinion of possibilities to theoretical contra practical education and the possibility to have some of their education in work-life outside school.

About the project

A questionnaire (2010) was sent by the National statistic office (SSB)  to a representative sample of students (N=1000) in the 10. (last) year of obligated education about their opinion of school, their learning results and their future educational plans. Answers 579 (57,9 %). Girls from the middle class in rural areas are overrepresented and workingclass boys from cities are underepresented in the netto-sample.

Results

Lower secondary school in Norway is more than ever independent of school-size, rural/urban, private/public and etnisity. School is more clearly than ever a basic universal institution in the late modern society. At the same time school is theoretical and based on modern middleclass values. The differences in learningsresults between middleclass and workingclass students and between boys and girls are bigger than ever. Girls from the middle class are the winners in school and working class boys are the loosers. 40 % want job training in combination with school-education 1 - 2 days a week. Some marginal workingclass boys think their schooling has been wasted time.
