A learning analytics approach to exploring academic integration and dropout among first-year undergraduate students (Bra Start)

This project aims to examine and provide recommendations for academic integration and curriculum development with the help of multiple data types from digital platforms, surveys and study administrative sources.

About the project

'Bra start' is a two-year pilot research project at the University of Oslo (UiO), coordinated by the Department of Education at the Faculty of Educational Sciences.

The project is part of a broader effort at UiO to exploit the potential of digital data for curriculum development, student guidance and quality enhancement in higher education.

The project uses a longitudinal mixed-methods design to examine undergraduate students academic integration in the first year of study and various factors supporting completion (both individual and contextual). The project will build expertise in the area of learning analysis, and explore how this approach can be used for educational purposes at UiO.

Objectives

The project will contribute systematic knowledge about processes and factors involved in first-year undergraduate students' academic integration, completion of first year of study, and positive study experiences, as well as knowledge and capacity about using learning analytical methods for pedagogical purposes.

Background

The first semester at UiO is pivotal for student success. Both research findings and UiO's statistics reveal challenges regarding completion in the first study year, despite measure to support academic integration; and the underused potential of digital data from various digital learning environments. There is a need for systematic knowledge about aspects that contribute to students’ activities and experiences of relevance for completion, and how digital trace data can complement data types traditionally used in examining this phenomenon.

Financing

The project is funded by the University of Oslo, from funds allocated within the Strategic Area ‘IT in Education’.

Cooperation

Department of Research and Innovation Administration at UiO (FIADM) as well as all faculties at UiO.
