John Dewey’s aesthetics (completed)

The project studies John Dewey’s experience theoretical approach to aesthetics with special emphasis on his book «Art as Experience» from 1934.

About the project

Dewey’s approach is interesting to education for several reasons which are connected to his concept of experience. There is a promise of reconnecting art with everyday life and with the experience of children of their world. The concept and approach also allows for a holistic and that is differentiated study of these experiences where aspects of cognition, emotion, communication and action, just to name the most central ones, interact with each other and make up a whole. Thus, there are not only consequences for art education to be drawn but for subject matter in school, for teaching and for learning in general. There is then an aesthetic dimension of education to consider, and the presence of an aesthetic quality in educational processes emerges as a central validity criterion: there is no educational process unless the process has aesthetic quality. However the project studies concerns not only the consequences to be drawn from Dewey’s concept of experience but puts the concept itself under scrutiny as well.
