About the project
In my PhD project I explore the socio-cultural context for multilingualism in Norway from a discourse-analytical perspective. I am particularly concerned with how the educational system provides for opportunities to develop and maintain language and literacy skills for children growing up in resettled, migrant homes and how migrant families themselves experience language and early literacy provision offered through the mainstream educational system.
The project pursues a social constructionist approach where both language and literacy are perceived as social practices, interacting actively with other elements of the social. The project aims to shed light on these dialectic relations seen as essential in the process of meaning-making in and of the social world. The wider significance is in contributing with critical perspectives on the conditions for multilingualism in today’s Norway.
