The development of Talkwall

Talkwall has been developed in close collaboration with teachers, students, researchers, and designers over many years. Here you can read about the phases in the research behind the development of the product.

2023–: Talkwall III

The new Talkwall was launched in 2024 with a new design and several updates based on the experiences from the long-term development collaboration. We have emphasized universal design, flexible navigation, the ability to enlarge messages, and to export content to other platforms. The Talkwall can also be integrated into other platforms.

2016–2019: Talkwall

Based on research and the experiences from our previous studies, we further developed Socius into a new tool called Talkwall. The design aims to support community and dialogue in the classroom. The research project Digital Dialogues combined Talkwall with resources to support dialogic teaching. These resources were developed by researchers from the University of Cambridge.

To better support collaboration and academic learning, in the next phase, we experimented with microblogging. This involves sharing short messages on a large shared screen. The tool was called Socius and was designed for use on tablets through an app. Socius was designed in collaboration with high school teachers.

2008–2014: TWEAK

Talkwall is based on research on learning and teaching with digital technologies. To enable teachers to support students’ writing processes and collaboration, we designed additional components using wiki technology. We included a chat so that the teacher can be available to students, and we incorporated the option for tagging to highlight key concepts.
