Part-time teacher education at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research

Hybrid teaching involves students participating in classes in various ways, with some being present in the physical classroom while others join digitally. Digital tools like Talkwall can be used to foster learning communities and dialogue between students and instructors across different platforms.

Our part-time teacher education program, PPU, spans over three semesters and is based on a combination of gatherings and online teaching utilizing flipped classroom methodology. The mandatory teaching occurs digitally in the evenings in addition to physical gatherings and practice periods. This provides increased flexibility for our students who live scattered across the country, have full-time jobs during the day, and family commitments.

In the pedagogy seminar teaching, we actively use Talkwall to bring out student voices in large student groups. Students make individual preparations at home, which lays the groundwork for active participation in group work during the seminar. Talkwall is used for reflections, brainstorming, summaries, and sharing of practical experiences. In this way, Talkwall contributes to active participation and ensures equitable education.

We also use Talkwall to integrate learning activities within the seminar and between seminars. Group work in seminars can be based on individual preparation in Talkwall. The diversity of student voices becomes accessible to the entire student group across tasks, teaching modalities (physical attendance and online participation), and students’ academic backgrounds.

In plenary discussions, instructors use Talkwall to focus on which questions students need to explore further, what they need more help understanding, and what they find more interesting. This strengthens the plenary discussion as a consolidation arena. We also use the information we gather from student contributions on Talkwall to adjust our own teaching.
