Being a Learner with New Technology in Educational Settings (PhD project) (completed)

In this doctoral project, Kenneth Silseth study how young people learn with new technology in and across sites of participation.

About the project

By employing a sociocultural and dialogical approach to learning, Silseth study how students learn in educational settings when participating in activities which are facilitated by new technology. The purpose of the project is to gain insight into how students learn with new technology in and across sites of participation. Also, the role of the teacher in this process is also of great interest in the study. The following research questions guides the work in the thesis:

  • How do students learn with new technology in educational settings?
  • How does new technology engage students in learning activities in school?
  • How is this engagement channeled in the institutional context of schooling?
  • What does it mean to be a learner, in the context of learning with new technology?

In order to explore these questions, Silseth studies two different cases; game-based learning and digital storytelling:

  • In the first case students at an upper secondary school are playing a “serious game” called Global Conflicts: Palestine, in which they take the role as journalists writing articles about different themes connected to the Middle East Conflict.
  • In the second case, students at a lower secondary school are making digital stories about different themes linked to the World War II.
