About the project

The lack of consideration for the connection between migration pedagogy and special needs pedagogy highlights an important research gap. This calls for more research that considers different migration experiences, cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as country-specific special needs regulations.

This doctoral project focuses on the experiences of students with special needs from immigrant backgrounds, including their access to education and social services in schools.

Objectives

The project aims to explore these experiences, identify common barriers, and highlight successful policies that can facilitate positive inclusion outcomes.

Background

The general question is: What are the key factors that characterize the social and educational experiences of immigrant students with special needs in Norway?

To examine this topic, three sub-studies will be conducted:

  • Sub-study 1: Systematic review aims to explore the current state of research on immigrant children with special needs in the Nordic countries.
  • Sub-study 2: Participatory qualitative study with immigrant students with special needs aims to explore the school experiences of immigrant students with special needs in Norway.
  • Sub-study 3: Qualitative study with parents and teachers aims to investigate their perspectives regarding the inclusion of immigrant students with special needs in Norwegian schools.

The project period for this PhD project is from September 2023 to  August 2027.
