Background

In today's highly competitive academic world, writing courses tend to prioritize writing techniques over the crucial first step of developing original, thought-provoking ideas. The constant pressure to produce a high volume of publications and grant applications can create a stressful environment, causing people to focus solely on achieving groundbreaking results. However, without fostering a rich and imaginative thought process, the end result will lack substance and creativity. To support young scholars and researchers, it is vital to encourage a collaborative environment where they can engage in fruitful discussions and share their ideas with others, leading to a mutual exchange of knowledge and inspiration that can help them to develop their unique perspectives. By nurturing their ideas, we can cultivate a new generation of innovative and critical thinkers who will make meaningful contributions to their fields.

Aims

Science is a highly collaborative field, and the upcoming summer school is an opportunity for early-stage researchers to come together and engage in an intensive, collaborative writing workshop. The goal is to provide a supportive environment where participants can develop their original ideas and collaborate on joint publications. By bringing together international participants from the Research-tandem project, the workshop will provide a unique opportunity for early-stage researchers to develop their writing skills, network and exchange knowledge with their peers from around the world.

Under the guidance of international senior scholars, participants will have the opportunity to work on concrete writing projects and receive feedback and support as they progress. This collaborative writing workshop is designed to help early-stage researchers build the skills and relationships they need to succeed in science.

Learning Objectives

The summer school is designed for advanced students (MA and Ph.D.) and early-career researchers in the human and social sciences interested in cultural phenomena and psychological processes. The program will take a collaborative approach to learning, which will emphasize the connection between theoretical and empirical knowledge.

Through this summer school, participants will have the opportunity to:

  1. Develop a solid foundation in basic scientific writing skills, focusing on intellectual exploration and the ability to deeply analyze complex problems.
  2. Gain practical experience in creating an academic writing project, from the initial stages of idea development to the maturation of those ideas.
  3. Enhance their reflective thinking skills in academic writing, which is crucial for producing meaningful and impactful research.
  4. Build interdisciplinary and intercultural collaboration skills, essential for success in today's increasingly global academic landscape.

Methodology

The summer school program will combine plenary lectures, research project presentations and discussions, small-group writing workshops, and writing supervision. The program aims to foster a collaborative and intellectually stimulating atmosphere that encourages informal, deep, and productive exchanges among participants of all levels of seniority.

The working language for the summer school will be English, making it accessible to diverse participants from different countries and backgrounds. The program will provide a certificate upon completion, which the participant's university of origin will recognize for the attribution of 4 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits.

Venue

The summer school will take place at the Campus Blindern of the University of Oslo. The activities will be hosted at the Faculty of Education Sciences, building Helga Engs Hus.

The address is Universitetet i Oslo, Sem Sælands vei 7, 0371 Oslo.

How to get there

It is recommended you take the subway to get to Helga Engs Hus.
