This workshop will teach you about design principles that Universal Design for Learning, using rhetoric, and practical design and presentation techniques to improve your skills.
Whether you are a student, teacher, a research, an administrator, or a Doctoral or Post-Doctoral student, public presentations are an important way that we communicate our ideas with people.
PowerPoint, Prezi, and Keynote are common tools for teaching, conferences, thesis defences, and other types of presentations. But do you consider how your slide design and presentation techniques impact audience interest and accessibility?
By joining this workshop, you will learn practical techniques to improve your presentation material and skills, including:
- Design principles that support Universal Design for Learning
- Rhetorical principles that support presentation planning, and
- How to apply design thinking to your presentation material to communicate ideas more engagingly and effectively
Participants are required to bring a laptop to the workshop.
- As part of a workshop activity, participants are encouraged to bring slides from a previous presentation or lecture they have given (PowerPoint, Prezi, Keynote).
In the workshop, participants will be given an opportunity to:
- Learn how to improve the Universal Design of presentation material based on Mayer's multimedia design principles,
- Share and discuss their own presentation designs in small groups, and
- Learn rhetorical and design techniques to prepare better public presentations.

10:45-11:30 - Shane Colvin
- Design and communication principles for better presentations
- Practical presentation techniques to improve presentation skills
UV students, teachers, learning assistants, Ph. D. and Post-Doctoral students, UV researchers, and other staff contributing to teaching are all welcome to join the workshop.
