Online learning management systems such as Canvas support student learning by providing content and allowing for collaborative activities (e.g. asynchronous online discussions).

As a result, teachers are expected to design activities and guide students' active learning. However, teachers often need help monitoring and supporting their students during active learning activities.

As part of his PhD, Rogers Kaliisa, with the support from UV’s EngageLab, developed a learning analytics tool called Canvas Discussion Analytics Dashboard (CADA) to support teachers’ practice through quicker insights into students’ participation and engagement patterns during asynchronous online discussions. It provides an automated analysis of the discussion forum posts through simple visualizations such as sociograms and fine-grained discourse analysis (e.g. key concepts and sentiment).Teachers can use the insights gained as a diagnostic tool to improve their teaching and inform their learning design.

In this seminar, participants will be introduced to the CADA tool and oriented on how teachers can use it to support timely learning design decisions.
