UV teachers and staff will soon be able to learn how to self-produce videos and podcasts for their classrooms or other audiences. New training support and a new studio at HES are under development.

Instructions for Podcasters

U29 is a self-production podcast studio. The Rødecaster Pro is automatically connected to record on the PC to a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) called Reaper.

Follow these instructions and the additional User Guides in U29 to record, edit, and export your podcast.

  1. Turn on the Rødecaster - Follow the Quick Start Guide for more information.
  2. Log onto the PC.
  3. Download the HES U29 Reaper Template - The template automatically configures Reaper for recording with the Rødecaster Pro.
    1. If Reaper does not detect a recording device, follow Steps 2-3 in the Rødecaster USB Recording Instructions guide. Set up the Audio Device Setting preferences (displayed in Step 3) as follows:

      1. Audio device: WASAPI (Windows 7/8/10/Vista)
Input Device: Microphone (RODECaster Pro Multichannel)
Output Device: Headphones (Synaptics HD Audio)
        Input channels: 14
        Output channels: 2

      2. Press OK in the dialogue window

      3. Close Reaper and reopen the HES U29 Reaper Template

  4. Open the HES U29 Reaper Template from your download folder. Wait 5 seconds and click Still Evaluating.
  5. Under the File menu in Reaper, select Save project as... in Reaper and choose a location on the PC to save your podcast to.
  6. Speak into a microphone and confirm an audio signal is processed in Reaper - No signal? Check the Rødecaster USB Recording Instructions guide.
  7. When you are ready to record, press the Record button in Reaper (Step 19 in the Rødcaster USB Recording guide).
  8. When you are done recording, press the Record button in Reaper to stop recording. Save your Reaper Project file to avoid losing your podcast audio.
  9. To edit your podcast in Reaper, follow the Editing in Reaper Instructions guide.

  10. To export your podcast, follow the Reaper Export Instructions guide.

IDEA Media Production Training

Creating digital learning material for education is becoming increasingly important for modern classrooms. Video and podcasts can be embedded into e-courses, used as part of flipped classrooms, or as supplementary material for students.

Through IDEA Opplæring, UV staff can already learn how to use and teach with the digital technology in Helga Engs Hus seminar rooms. During Autumn 2023, IDEA is expanding upon the training we provide to UV teaching staff by developing training material and resources for self-producing videos and podcasts. Media Production Opplæring will help UV staff develop their skills in:

  • Pre-production basics for videos and podcasts,
  • Technical training with video and podcasting equipment, and
  • Recording and editing videos and podcasts.

For more information on media production training, please contact IDEA Videopedagog Clay Gouin

UV Media Studio

IDEA and UV are cooperating to build a media production studio in HES. Room U29 is currently under construction to create a flexible recording space for UV staff. While the Studio is being planned to allow for all forms of media production, development will be ongoing through 2023.

The Studio is expected to develop in phases and allow for flexible media production, including:

  • A podcasting with up to four microphones
  • Self-produced videos
  • Photography

Over time, the Studio is expected to increase the equipment and technical capacity of the room for filming and photography by adding:

  • Additional lighting
  • Additional cameras and microphones
  • Green screen
