University Pedagogy Module: Teaching with Generative AI

In this module, we focus on the ways we can make use of opportunities provided by generative AI technologies to support teachers’ work with designing teaching activities and assessment forms. Principles underlying student-centered activities and pedagogical use of technology are fundamental in this module.

Why take this module?

The new generation of AI tools offers opportunities to renew teaching and has an impact on the way we learn, teach and assess. Concurrently, AI also creates predictable and unpredictable challenges related to pedagogical, responsible, and ethical use of AI in educational contexts. In this module, we focus on ways we can use generative AI tools in learning and assessment designs to support students in their mastery of topical knowledge and relevant skills.

We also explore how to formulate and grade assessment tasks as well as how to provide useful feedback to the students. At the end of this module, participants will be familiar with a range of different assessment and feedback forms and will explore how these forms may be integrated in their own practices.

In this module, participants will learn about:

  • Pedagogical principles for use of AI technologies in teaching and pedagogical design

  • Generative AI tools (approved at UiO) with use potential in teaching and learning activities

  • Principles and approaches in pedagogical design

  • Concrete ways of designing learning activities (tasks, assignments), assessment forms, and exams using or incorporating AI tools

  • Critical aspects involved in responsible use of AI in teaching

  • How other educators have been using AI tools in their teaching

Organisation of the module

The module has three components:

  • A series of three workshops (2,5 hours each) in which participants are presented relevant insights into pedagogical applications of generative AI and engage in guided explorations of pedagogical design with AI-tools.

    • Workshop 1: Foundations of GenAI for the Classroom

    • Workshop 2: Ongoing Feedback and Assessment with GenAI

    • Workshop 3: Innovative Exam Design

  • One group-based mentoring session (1,5-hours) where peers and an experienced teacher provide feedback on pedagogical design ideas/plans.

  • Completion of an individual assignment consisting of:
    a) a proposal for a design of a learning activity, assessment form, or exam form incorporating generative AI, and
    b) a brief (1-1,5 pages) reflection note on pedagogical principles and choices made in the aforementioned design.

The assignment gives participants the opportunity to engage with a self-chosen problem related to designing one’s own teaching. The description of the envisioned design can be in textual or multimedia (e.g., video and graphics) form. The reflection note should be supported by pedagogical (research) literature.

The module requires participants to contribute actively, with emphasis placed on the discussion of specific issues and challenges related to in light of own knowledge and needs for teaching.

Practical Information

  • The spoken language in the plenary activities is English. You can write your assignments in Norwegian. The planned group activities and discussions can also be held in Norwegian, depending on group composition.

  • Participants: Academic staff in fixed-term positions (postdocs and PhD students) at UV. Exceptions can be made for permanent employees who need complete their university pedagogical training

  • Module scope: 15 hours, formally approved as university pedagogy by LINK

  • Admission requirement: None. It is preferrable that participants have teaching responsibility or expect to engage in teaching in the coming period.

  • The module will be offered in fall 2024. Workshop dates are: 27 September, 25 October, and 22 November 2024.

Note 1: To obtain certificate of participation, participants are required to attend all of the activities and submit the complete assignment.

Note 2: The module is offered to PhDs, postdoctorals, and new employees with a permanent position at UV. Upon availability, junior teaching staff at other faculties at UiO can apply.
