QUINT Observation System Seminar: October 24th 2023

Welcome to the QUINT Observation Systems Seminars (OBS seminars).  This series will discuss classroom observation systems as a tool for understanding and improving teaching quality.

Illustration, camera and teaching situation

This and upcoming OBS seminars are open for all interested parties.  We want it to become a meeting arena for scholars genuinely interested in observation systems and related issues. Therefore we recommend that you join our network by subscribing to the network mailing list. You must confirm your email address in the confirmation email you receive to complete signing up to the mailing list.

If you are interested in presenting your research or have questions, please contact the organizer, QUINT Postdoctoral Fellow Mark White.

Program

In this seminar, taking place on October 24th, 4:00 PM–5:00 PM CET, Sara Hennessy will be presenting: Developing and adapting coding schemes for classroom dialogue. Presentation file for download.

Abstract

This talk addresses some of the methodological issues and challenges arising in the growing research area of coding the features of classroom discourse considered productive for learning. It introduces a fine-grained (33-category) Cam-UNAM Scheme for Educational Dialogue Analysis (SEDA) and then describes how and why it was condensed and adapted for new research purposes. These include the (12-category) Cambridge Dialogue Analysis Scheme (CDAS) used in a recent large-scale project conducted in primary schools in England to relate dialogic teaching to student learning outcomes, and the Toolkit for Systematic Educational Dialogue Analysis (T-SEDA). The latter includes a set of coding and rating tools and templates, based around a (10-category) version for practitioners at all educational levels (used in 15 countries and translated into 8 languages to date). The most recent tool is the (12-category) Tech-SEDA for capturing dialogue around shared artefacts in technology-mediated educational settings.
