QUINT Observation System Seminar: October 6th, 2021

Welcome to the QUINT Observation Systems Seminars (OBS seminars).  This series will discuss classroom observation systems as a tool for understanding and improving teaching quality.

This and upcoming OBS seminars are open for all interested parties.  We want it to become a meeting arena for scholars genuinely interested in observation systems and related issues. Therefore we recommend that you join our network by subcribing to the network mailing list. You must confirm your email address in the confirmation email you receive to complete signing up to the mailing list.

If you are interested in presenting your research or have questions, please contact the organizer, QUINT Postdoctoral Fellow Mark White.

Program

In this seminar, taking place on October 6th at 10am ET/ 16.00 CT, Courtney  Bell, WCER Director & Professor of Learning Sciences, will be presenting work related to the Global Teaching Insights Study (GtI).  The talk is entitled: Re-envisioning observation rater training through the learning sciences.

Abstract: The TALIS Video Study Observations of teaching rely on human raters. Given the importance of validated ratings, researchers frequently seek ways to train and monitor raters that will provide high quality ratings. In this seminar I will describe a novel approach to the training of raters that conceptualizes rater training as adult learning in a socio-historical context. Using the case of the TALIS Video study, an OECD observational study of teaching and learning in eight countries/economies, I will describe the connections between how teaching practices were defined in the observation system -- the training approach taken -- and the results of the training.
