In this seminar, taking place on December 5th at 9am ET/ 15.00 CET, Charalambos Charalambous and Anna-Katharina Praetorius will be presenting on their work titled: Adding Content to the Equation: What Might it Look Like?
Abstract: For years, a typical approach in educational effectiveness research has been to focus on key subjects--mostly mathematics--and assume that the findings obtained “travel” across content areas. This assumption is, however, challenged by the fact that empirical studies do not consistently yield expected results across subjects, as well by the fact that many scholars consider generic frameworks and models inadequate for capturing teaching quality--thus underlining the need to take content seriously into consideration. But what does this imply? Addressing this question, in this presentation we first argue that both content-generic and content-specific approaches in exploring teaching quality and its effects are necessary. Toward this end, we present a model for synthesizing across content-generic and content-specific frameworks and models. Next, we reflect on concrete ideas on how to synthesize. We conclude by reflecting on their affordances and limitations and raise open questions about optimal ways of rendering content a key part of the equation.
