QUINT Teaching Quality Webinar: Perspectives on Quality in Social Science Teaching

Webinar series on theorising teaching quality for researchers in the QUINT centre.

Perspectives on Quality in Social Science Teaching

Description

In the QUINT project Comparing Quality in Social Science Teaching in Nordic Classrooms (QUISST), researchers have worked with various approaches to quality in social science teaching. One approach based on social science didactics, particularly in the overall purpose of the subject, which we can describe as political Bildung, and on forms of knowledge frequently found in social science teaching utterances, is presented (see Christensen 2022). How can we describe quality in social science teaching based on the purpose, content and form of the subject? This approach is contrasted by what we could term a social science didactic perspective on PLATO (se Christensen & Mathe 2023). Can we identify social science teaching qualities using PLATO? The idea is that by being open to different approaches, we get a more composite picture of quality, but not necessarily an unambiguous one.

Discussion points

  • What do we gain by choosing more perspectives on quality in the subject teaching? What do we lose?
