QUINT Teaching Quality Webinar: Connected Classrooms Nordic Study

Webinar series on theorising teaching quality for researchers in the QUINT centre.

Investigating teaching qualities in connected classrooms – a media ecology perspective

Description

The broader aim of the Connected Classroom Nordic-project is to explore what constitutes quality in teaching in relation to digitalization of education, through bringing together researchers, teachers and students in collaborative video based, longitudinal investigations of contemporary teaching in digitally rich classrooms in all Nordic countries.

In this paper, we want to develop our thinking about how to understand and conceptualize aspects of different teaching qualities, in a plural sense, as teachers and students navigate and make use of digital technology in classrooms. Our project departs from a media-ecology approach, where digital media and technology is understood in terms of environments. Going beyond perspectives on digitalization as merely about implementation of new tools and developing digital competence, we are interested in what happens with classrooms as environments for teaching, learning and interaction when “new” digital resources meet  the “old” non-digital classroom practices. Based on empirical data, we investigate a cluster of conditions in the connected classroom teaching practices that play out in different ways related to students’ opportunities for engagement with subject content matter, conditions for student participation in classroom interaction, affordances and constraints to student agency and dimensions of equal access to and equity in digital practices. We refer to this approach in terms of a multi-layered view on quality, where the same teaching activity can be understood in many or all of these dimensions simultaneously.

In the webinar, we want to discuss this work-in-progress and discuss the following questions:

  • Do digitalization processes change basic conceptions and understandings of teaching quality? If so – how?
  • Possible contributions and limitations from taking a focus on student engagement with content, participation, agency and equity in relation to conceptualizations of teaching quality?
